Preparing for Fall and Winter

There’s a reason why HVAC companies are busier in the winter and summer! Folks tend to wait until they need AC or heat and something breaks and emergency repairs are needed. However, a little preventive maintenance can go a long way. With temperatures still warm, now is the perfect time to prepare your home for winter’s colder temps.

  • Clean or replace air filters: Dirty HVAC filters restrict airflow and reduce the entire efficiency of the HVAC system. Ideally, they should be cleaned or replaced every 30-90 days depending on use, pets in the house, and if there are occupants with allergies or asthma.
  • Be sure to seal any air leaks around windows, doors, and other openings.
  • Ensure that the vents and ducts are clean, and air is circulating freely.
  • Use curtains to help keep warm air in.
  • Consider investing in a programmable or smart thermostat.
  • Cycle off your heat pump or hot water heater during times of peak energy demand.

Most people don’t notice this, and it’s the number one thing you can do help reduce our peak demand. Duke will also pay you up to $175 in bill credits or referrals!

Our Setting the Course for Clean Energy workshop on August 7 was well-attended! Thanks to Amy Musser of Vandemusser Design and Sam Ruark-Eastes of the Green Built Alliance for their wonderful presentations!
